Extractive technologies
Macfarlan Smith has been isolating and purifying APIs from natural products for over two hundred years. Our wide range of expertise in natural product extraction allows for the provision of commercially viable alternatives to synthetic routes.
These facilities are also available for the extraction of customers' own natural raw materials and the production of alkaloids and other active principles not included in our product list
Aqueous extraction plant
Multi-vessel batch extraction with a capacity of 0.5-40 tonnes a year.
Solvent extraction plant
Batch extraction with a multi-solvent facility, solvent recycle and downstream solvent extraction. Capacity is 0.5-5 tonnes extractable biomass/batch (2-1,000 tonnes a year).
Continuous solvent extraction
State-of-the-art continuous belt extractor with a multi-solvent capability rated at 20 tonnes biomass a day. The extractor is operated under a continous nitrogen purge to maintain an inert environment. Downstream facilities include liquid/liquid counter current column extractions, liquid/liquid extraction centrifuges, wiped film evaporators and semi-continuous rotary drum vacuum filters.
